Workshop

The measurement of nonordinary experiences presents unique challenges, requiring specific approaches to obtain unbiased results. In this minicourse, we will address the definition of nonordinary experiences, explore various scales and their differences, and learn about their history in Brazil. The discussions will offer insights for all stages of research, such as how to avoid overlap with other constructs in questionnaire construction, how to prevent priming issues in the presentation of scales, and what to consider in data analysis. Participants will engage in practical activities to understand the factors that influence this measurement, providing a deep understanding and practical application in the field of nonordinary experiences.

The application of open-ended questionnaires is one of the most popular techniques in qualitative research. But how to construct items more efficiently and assertively? How to avoid receiving responses that do not correspond to the question of interest? In this workshop, we will explore some techniques for validating forms, focusing on the Response Probing Evaluation (RPE; Wolf et al., 2021), used in the construction of the Inventory of Nonordinary Experiences. Our goal will be to understand the original methodology and its practical application, using the validation of the INOE in Brazilian Portuguese as an example. Through interactive activities, we will discuss the challenges often encountered during this process, as well as alternatives to optimize and streamline its implementation.

The workshop offers a theoretical and practical introduction to conducting large-scale online studies, focusing on the formR and rMarkdown tools. It covers the fundamentals, advantages, and challenges of online studies, including response quality control, planning, sampling, recruitment, data management, and ethical and regulatory compliance. In the practical part, participants will develop a basic questionnaire and learn about branching logic, response handling, data visualization, and report creation.
